VISION

The Great Works Theatre Festival envisions a vibrant and dynamic annual event that celebrates the power of theatrical storytelling by presenting bold new adaptations and interpretations of timeless masterpieces from around the world. Rooted in artistic excellence, cultural inclusivity, and accessibility, the festival aspires to become a cornerstone of the Victoria and Pacific Northwest arts scene, inspiring audiences and artists alike.

ASPIRATIONS

  • Reinterpreting the Classics

We are committed to breathing new life into great works from world theatre history, offering innovative productions that challenge, excite, and engage modern audiences.

  • Championing Diversity and Inclusion

By fostering opportunities for underrepresented voices, including newcomer and marginalized artists, we strive to ensure that the global richness of theatre is reflected both on stage and behind the scenes.

  • Building a Thriving Artistic Community

We aim to nurture emerging theatre artists by providing them with meaningful professional opportunities, mentorship, and an artistic platform that supports their growth and development. This includes giving local emerging artists the opportunity to work alongside established theatre professionals, allowing them to gain invaluable experience and artistic insight.

  • Enriching the Cultural Landscape

The festival will bring world-class theatre to Victoria, fostering a deeper appreciation for the master-works of around the world and encouraging dialogue between cultures.

  • Creating a Sustainable Future

Through strong community engagement, partnerships, and public support, we seek to establish the festival as a lasting cultural institution, ensuring its continued impact for years to come.

We acknowledge, with deep respect and gratitude, that our festival takes place on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territories of the lək̓ʷəŋən-speaking peoples, known today as the Songhees and Esquimalt Nations. We recognize their continued stewardship of this land and honor their resilience, culture, and storytelling traditions that have thrived here since time immemorial.

As a theatre festival, we are committed to amplifying diverse voices, fostering meaningful relationships with Indigenous artists and communities, and learning how we can contribute to a future rooted in respect, reciprocity, and reconciliation.

We invite all who gather here to reflect on their own relationship to this land and to join us in acknowledging its history and its caretakers.
